Finishing 91st in 2017-18 Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings

Graphic that reads "Southern Utah 2017 - 18 Directors' Cup Top 100 Team"Southern Utah University has ended season as one of the top-100 Division I teams in the 2017-18 Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings, earning the 91st spot in the nation.

The Director’s Cup tracks the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletics program for their performances throughout the year.

“This is an accomplishment that we are all incredibly proud of,” SUU Athletic Director Debbie Corum said. “It shows that we’re making the right steps as a department to not only be competitive in the Big Sky and the state of Utah, but the entire NCAA.”

Southern Utah was the second Big Sky Conference team in the Directors’ Cup standings, behind only Northern Arizona who finished in 70th. The next closest Big Sky team to Southern Utah was Northern Colorado in 188th.

Big Sky and in-state rival Weber State finished 201st in the standings. SUU also finished ahead of Utah Valley University, who landed in 211th.  

In regards to teams with FCS designation, the Thunderbirds were 13th in the nation.

Southern Utah’s placement was strongly boosted by the men’s cross country, football, men’s indoor track and field and gymnastics programs for their national finish amongst the other top teams in the NCAA.

The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships. Read the updated scoring changes for the 2017 - 2018 year.
