Deloitte Scholarship recipientsThis year, five Southern Utah University students were awarded scholarships from the Deloitte Foundation; a competitive scholarship awarded to accounting students as they work towards becoming Certified Public Accountants.

“I truly believe that it is a responsibility to give back,” said Vince Rosdahl, Deloitte partner and SUU alumnus. “I was a first-generation college graduate and that has impacted my children and grandchildren – they now see university/college as an option. As the degree that I worked to obtain at SUU and the knowledge obtained has truly impacted my ability to increase my income, I believe that I should give back – to help pave the way for others to obtain what I have.”

The Deloitte Foundation Scholarship is awarded to junior or senior accounting students with exceptional academic performance throughout their time at SUU. Students must have a 3.5 overall GPA and a mastery of all introductory accounting courses. The Deloitte Foundation was founded in 1928, and has been providing high school and college students with financial support since their beginning by matching donations from their partners in the form of scholarships.

“This scholarship means a great deal to me,” said scholarship recipient Jaden Batty. “A college degree costs a lot of money and resources. There have been many who have sacrificed something so that I can be here, whether that be family, organizations who have provided scholarships, or even my own contributions. This scholarship has helped me pay for basic things like rent or food, which I am very grateful for.”

“This scholarship has been a great encouragement for my academic study,” agreed recipient Jialu Chen.

Thanks to the help of the Deloitte Scholarship, the recipients intend to complete their studies at SUU and further their careers as accountants, including some students pursuing a Master of Accountancy from SUU.

“I chose to study accounting because I love numbers, structure, and organization,” said recipient Taylor Damuni. “I’ve learned so many important and applicable life skills in my classes such as budgeting, individual taxes, and management techniques. I hope to be able to help support my family with a wide range of flexible and stable career opportunities.”

“I hope that Deloitte itself becomes somewhere that students desire to have a career,” said Rosdahl. “Deloitte has been a wonderful place for my career and hopefully, with the exposure that this scholarship brings results in some fantastic SUU students wanting to join our team – and then give back.”

Application for the Deloitte Foundation Scholarship opens in February and is open to any junior or senior studying accounting with over a 3.5 GPA. For more information about SUU’s scholarship opportunities, visit the scholarship website.

Few college degree programs offer the clear path to career success that is available through the AACSB-accredited accounting bachelor’s degree program at Southern Utah University. Nearly 100 percent of accounting graduates are employed right after graduation and employers typically seek them out before they complete their college degree.
