International Women's WeekAcross the globe, March 8th is known as International Women’s Day. It is a day to shine a light on the necessary advancement for gender equality among all walks of life, as well as devote special recognition to all the social, cultural, political, and economic accomplishments that women contribute. It is also a day for women to extend special appreciation to the influential women and female-identifying individuals in their lives. For several years, Southern Utah University groups and organizations have individually celebrated International Women’s Day by hosting events. In 2021, the University began hosting a week-long series of events to celebrate the contributions of women not only on campus but in society.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of women around the world,” said Mary Pearson, president of SUU Women’s Network. “This event will help raise awareness about the cultural equality of women in our society and provide a better understanding about where we are and where we want to be.”

The chosen theme for the 2022 SUU International Women’s Week was “Celebrating Women of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow,” coinciding with the University’s 125 anniversary on March 14th. Additionally, the theme goes hand in hand with the 10th anniversary of the Women and Gender Studies Program and the Tanner Center’s tribute to Grace A. Tanner, “Year of Grace.”

“Celebration of International Women’s Day has always been part of SUU’s Women’s Week and the Women and Gender Studies program,” remarked co-coordinator of the Women and Gender Studies Program, Shobha Hamal Gurung. “Over the years, we have had the opportunity to showcase the phenomenal scholars, community workers, policymakers, and social justice activists who represent our campus, local community, and national and global communities. International Women’s Day has provided a platform to recognize and celebrate the diverse experiences and lived realities of women beyond the Global North.”

SUU hosted a week-long celebration for International Women’s Week with activities on campus available to all students starting March 7th and ending March 11th.
