Rabbit PlateFind the perfect handmade Mother's Day or graduation gift at the SUU Ceramics Guild Spring Sale on Wednesday, April 13, and Thursday, April 14, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Living Room. This sale offers a variety of potted plants, pottery, and candles. All of the pots and planters are made by SUU Ceramics students and plants are grown on campus in the SUU Greenhouse. Proceeds from the sale help SUU Ceramics majors go to the annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Conference. Prices vary based on the ceramics and artist.

Sarah Gardiner, a junior majoring in Ceramics from Magna, Utah, shares, “Funds from our sale go directly towards supporting the Ceramics Guild at SUU and supporting the contributing artists. It is important for the community to attend because as a Guild, we use the proceeds to pay for travel, amongst other things, to attend different ceramics based conferences and events. It’s also important because it gives our student contributors exposure as artists in their own right.”

Gardiner goes on to say, “My favorite part of working in ceramics would have to be just how few limits there are in what you can create. For me personally, I treat every new project like an inverted puzzle. I start with an overall idea and then I have to determine which steps and processes need to happen to produce the final result.”

Southern Utah University offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Arts with a Ceramics/Sculpture Emphasis. This is a professional degree focusing on the intensive study of three-dimensional work, as it relates to the ceramic process and multi-media materials. Students develop knowledge and understanding of technical methodologies relating to hand-building and throwing processes, glaze development, various firing methods, mold-making, and slip-casting. They gain a firm foundation of contemporary and historical ceramics and sculpture and have opportunities to combine their ceramic skills with other mediums such as wood, felt, and stone, and each individual determines their own artistic three-dimensional artistic practices.

Cris Van Horne, president of the SUU Ceramics Guild, says, “The guild sales have been a fantastic way to help ceramics/sculpture students raise funds to travel to professional conferences. This year we had students represent SUU at Claycon West in St. George, and nine students were able to attend the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference in Sacramento. We really appreciate the community support for these opportunities.”
