SUU Guided Experiences: Archaeology Repository

SUU's Electronic Learning CenterIn celebration of Southern Utah University’s 125th Birthday, SUU, in partnership with the Visit Cedar City • Brian Head is hosting a series of guided experiences. These tours will showcase the University as never before. Exploring the past, present, and future of SUU, these guided experiences are a true celebration of the spirit of our founders. The November event will be a guided tour of SUU's Archaeology Repository.

The SUU Archaeology Repository stores artifacts recovered from archaeological surveys and excavations conducted on federal and state lands in southwestern Utah and the Arizona Strip since the early 1960s. It is a research center for professionals and students who are studying prehistoric cultures located in this region. During the visit, participants will learn the purpose of the repository, look at prehistoric and historic artifacts stored at the facility, and learn about the prehistory of southwestern Utah.

Barbara Frank, director of the SUU Repository, will guide the tour on Thursday, November 3 and again on Thursday, November 17. Both tours will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Repository, which is located is located in Room 101-A, in the basement of the Electronic Learning Center on the campus of SUU. Access is through the fire doors of Room 101, where the electrical panels and janitorial services are located. Turn right after going through the doors and you will see the entrance to the repository in Room 101-A.

In 1897 the founders of Southern Utah University believed so strongly in the power of education that they risked their lives and finances for the privilege of building and hosting an institution of higher education in rural Cedar City, Utah. Their determination and grit are woven into the cultural fabric of SUU. SUU’s enduring legacy is built on 125 years of fortitude, determination, and community triumph.
