For Edgar Flores, a driven student in SUU's acclaimed aviation program, that dream of taking to the skies is becoming a tangible reality. Pursuing dual bachelor's degrees in Aviation Science and Aviation Administration and Leadership with a focus on rotary wing aircraft, Flores's journey at SUU exemplifies the university's commitment to providing pathways for students to truly soar.

Originally from El Paso, Texas, Flores chose SUU for several compelling reasons, including the challenging high-altitude flying conditions, its reputation as the "University of the Parks" offering unparalleled access to outdoor adventures, and the invaluable support of the GI Bill. However, it's the hands-on, immediate immersion into flight that truly sets SUU apart for him.

"As soon as you're accepted into the program, you start flying pretty much anywhere from day one," Flores said. "The practical application of flying is amazing. The hand skills are something that you can only develop by doing the work, by performing behind the controls."

Flores's passion for aviation ignited at a young age during a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, a perspective that sparked a desire to make the skies his office. His background includes active duty service in the Air Force, and he found in SUU a top-rated helicopter program that allowed him to begin flying from his very first day on campus.

"It has been one of the greatest experiences I've ever had, if not the greatest," he said.

The personalized learning environment at SUU, characterized by small class sizes and dedicated instructors, has been instrumental in Flores's progress. This close mentorship ensures that students receive immediate and tailored feedback, crucial in the safety-conscious field of aviation.

"Here at the hangar, you typically have anywhere from 1 to 3 students per instructor," he said. “Anytime you make a small mistake, the instructor can address it right away. And that way you don't continue making the same mistakes."

As a "copilot," a student mentor role within the program, Flores is already paying it forward by guiding other students. This experience, alongside the rigorous curriculum that includes safety and human factors, provides a comprehensive understanding of the aviation industry.

Flores currently works as a flight instructor at SUU, with his ultimate career goal being to commission as a combat search and rescue pilot in the Air Force. He sees a direct connection between his degrees and this aspiration, blending his practical flying skills with his understanding of aviation management.

At Southern Utah University, the sky's the limit. Just ask Edgar Flores – this is where you soar.
