Psychology Department Group at Regional ConferenceCEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah University recently sent 57 psychology students and 15 faculty members to represent the University at the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association (RMPA) Conference in Denver, Colorado. This significant participation demonstrates SUU’s commitment to student success and active engagement in the psychology community.

The 95th Annual RMPA Convention brought together experts and researchers from across the Rocky Mountain region to share cutting-edge research, discuss critical topics in psychology, and foster collaboration.

Dr. Britton Mace made SUU’s involvement particularly notable. Dr. Mace is a professor of psychology and an experimental psychologist at SUU, who served as a coordinator for the Bell-Loomis Symposium on Research in Environmental Psychology. Dr. Mace's research interests are focused on environmental and social psychology, including a current project on the soundscape of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, recognized as one of the quietest protected areas in the United States. This active participation is just part of the department's contributions to significant discussions within the field.

"SUU psychology students were the most represented group of any university that participated in the RMPA conference again this year, something which makes us all very proud to showcase the academic prowess of the T-Birds!" said Dr.Mace.

Keynote and invited speakers presented on a wide array of subjects, including Inattentional Blindness, Diabetes Inequities in American Indian and Alaska Native Populations, The Landscape of Lying, Undergraduate Health, Wellness, and Technology Use, Strategies to Reduce Stereotyping and Discrimination, Psychology’s Promise for Teaching and Learning, Skills of Volunteerism, What Psychology Majors Really Need to Learn in Psychological Statistics, Implicit Bias, and Terror Management Theory.

Attendees gained valuable insights from the range of presentations. The conference provided an invaluable platform for both students and faculty to engage with current research and expand professional networks.

Southern Utah University’s psychology bachelor’s degree program explores the fascinating science of behavior and mental processes. Students may choose a research-focused course of study or the clinical/counseling-focused option. A research-focused major can lead to the more scientific aspects of a career in psychology. A clinical/counseling focus to the major is more in line with a future in counseling or human services. In addition, by taking the courses for a human services specialization, students can earn a social work license. Psychology professors are deeply involved in helping students choose courses that support their career goals and form strong mentoring relationships with students in classes. SUU’s presence at the RMPA Conference demonstrates the university’s dedication to providing students with impactful experiential learning opportunities and fostering a vibrant academic environment.
