The Southern Utah University Department of Theatre, Dance, and Arts Administration proudly announces its 2025-26 season under the theme Re:Frame, an invitation to audiences to experience both timeless works and bold new perspectives. The season reimagines classics, reinterprets traditions, and reconsiders the ways stories shape our understanding of the world.
“Our mission is to nurture and challenge the creative process of arts and culture,” explains Matthew Pedersen, Assistant Professor of Theatre - Costume Design & Technology. “That means that this department isn’t just a place to learn. It’s a space where we experiment, where we take risks, and where we discover new ways of seeing the world and find community. At a time when our country is divided and people are fighting to be heard, theatre and dance give us a way to listen and show our humanity differently. To reframe the narrative and take what is familiar and show it in a new light.”
The season opens in late September with William Shakespeare’s fast-paced farce The Comedy of Errors, directed by Peter Sham, bringing one of the Bard’s earliest plays into the neon 1980s. Dance will take center stage next with the Faculty Dance Concert, directed by newcomer Joshua Mora Yago and featuring special guest artist John Mead.
In November and January, Britannia Howe will direct Pippin, the beloved musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Roger O. Hirson, offering a vibrant take on the search for meaning and belonging. The Student Dance Concert, under the direction of Tyler Orcutt, showcases the creativity and innovation of SUU’s student choreographers and performers.
Dr. Scott Knowles will direct Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play by Anne Washburn, with score by Michael Friedman and lyrics by Washburn, a darkly comedic exploration of memory, myth, and the power of storytelling in a fractured world. Closing the season in April, Matthew Pedersen will direct Richard O’Brien’s cult-classic rock musical The Rocky Horror Show, a celebratory finale full of irreverence and spectacle.
To quote Pippin: “There’s something in us that’s calling for something more.” With this season, we invite you to find that “something more” together with us. For the full schedule, showtimes, and ticket information, please visit www.suu.edu/pva/ta/current-season.html.
