Southern Utah University’s Department of Filmmaking, Art, & Design is excited to host ceramic artist, designer, and educator Austin Coudriet as a Visiting Artist on Monday, September 22, 2025. Coudriet will be offering ceramics demonstrations in the Ceramics Studio (EVT 203) from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a short break from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, providing a valuable opportunity for students, artists, and community members to learn directly from a practicing artist.
Coudriet’s work challenges traditional boundaries between functional and sculptural forms. His practice explores what he calls “dysfunctional vessels and functional sculptures,” drawing inspiration from architecture, modern furniture, and deconstructivist design. His creative process often begins with sketches, collages, and visual clippings, which then transform into nonrepresentational sculpture and functional ceramic furniture.
In his Artist Statement, Coudriet explains, “My studio practice is an ongoing tactile conversation between soft amorphous forms and rigid linear components…The more I create, the more I collect inspiration from everything around me.”
Coudriet plans to pursue large-scale sculptural works and expand into functional ceramic furniture design, blending craft and contemporary design in innovative ways.
This visiting artist event is part of SUU’s mission to bring diverse perspectives and professional experiences to campus, enriching the education of students and strengthening community connections through the Arts. Join us for this unique opportunity to learn from Austin Coudriet and experience the creative process behind his innovative ceramic work.
