The SUU Department of Music welcomes internationally acclaimed pianist Jeanne Hourez for a guest artist recital on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. in the Thorley Recital Hall. This performance is free and open to the public.
Praised for her “rare talent for breathing life into the instrument” (Tunite Music), French pianist Jeanne Hourez is celebrated for her artistry as a soloist, chamber musician, researcher, and advocate for underrepresented voices in classical music. Her dynamic performance career has taken her across Europe, North America, and Asia, including collaborations with the Orchestre Symphonique de Cannes, the Orchestre Symphonique Azuréen, and the Orchestra Philharmonique des Musiciens de Montréal.
Hourez’s program at SUU will feature works exclusively by women composers from the 19th century to today, showcasing a tapestry of color, imagination, and storytelling through piano. The recital includes:
- Ania Vu (b. 1994) · Against Time
- Marguerite Canal (1890 - 1978) · Trois Esquisses Méditerranéennes
- Marie Jaël (1846 - 1925) · Romantic Sketches (selections)
- Mel Bonis (1858 - 1937) · Femmes de Légende (selections)
- Agathe Backer-Grøndahl (1847 - 1907) · I Blaafjellet (In the Blue Mountain)
Through this thoughtful program, Hourez brings to light the remarkable artistry and innovation of women composers while showcasing her talent and skill.
In addition to her performing career, Hourez, is a passionate educator and scholar. Her research on French composer Marguerite Canal has been presented at international conferences including the College Music Society (CMS), Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and the Royal Conservatoire Birmingham. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Music at Southwestern University, and her leadership extends to national organizations like CMS and the Texas Music Teachers Association.
Hourez’s recital promises to be an evening of musical discovery and inspiration, celebrating voices that continue to shape the landscape of piano music.
