Southern Utah University MBA student Matelier Numbi is driving discussions at the intersection of technology, national security, and business management with the publication of two research papers in prestigious academic and industry journals.
Numbi, who is also the fundraiser chair for the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) at SUU, co-authored both papers with SUU alumnus Gaston Elongha. Their work explores critical issues from domestic microchip production to the strategic use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the corporate world.
A graduate of Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, Numbi credits the Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business MBA program for fostering a mindset of applied learning and critical thinking.
"The MBA program at the Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business provides not only strong academic foundations but also a mindset of curiosity and exploration," Numbi said. "The support and mentorship I received truly shaped how I approached and developed both of these research papers."
Numbi's first paper, "The Future Dangers of Imported Microchips - Why America Must Take Control of Semiconductor Production," was published in the American Intelligence Journal (Vol. 42, Issue 1), a publication of the National Military Intelligence Foundation (NMIF).
"Microchips power almost everything from smartphones and computers to automobiles, hospitals, and national defense systems," Numbi said. "Our paper argues that America must take control of its semiconductor production to strengthen economic stability, security, and innovation. Building a sustainable domestic chip industry isn't just an economic choice but a strategic necessity."
The second paper, "Leveraging AI in Managerial Decision-Making: Driving Innovation and Growth in Business Management," was presented at the 65th International Association for Computer Information Systems (IACIS) Annual Conference in Tampa, Florida. This research highlights the critical need for businesses to adopt AI tools to enhance human intelligence and productivity and emphasizes the crucial ethical dimensions of this powerful technology.
Numbi highlights several inspiring figures, including Dr. Tyler Burrows , Dr. Kenneth Hall (MBA Program), and Professor Isabella Borisova (Engineering Department), noting that they lead by example, consistently pushing students to think beyond boundaries and reach their potential. Ultimately, Numbi feels that SUU is not just a university but a community characterized by warmth, inclusiveness, and excellence, where he has been able to grow both academically and personally.
Numbi also recently gave a TEDxSUU talk titled "The Invisible Layoff," further exploring the ethical and societal impact of AI on the workforce.
Numbi encourages other students to pursue independent research: "Find a mentor, stay persistent, and keep that fire of curiosity alive. Don't see yourself as a 'small fish'--dream big, think globally, and let your work reflect your passion."
