Southern Utah University’s Helen Foster Snow Cultural Center recently celebrated its third anniversary and the change it has brought to many lives. Named after the influential journalist and humanitarian, this center celebrates and continues Helen Foster Snow’s legacy of connection and friendship. Through music, dance, and speeches, students and staff honored and celebrated the beauty of an intercultural community.
“Helen is a terrific example of working across cultures and across borders,” SUU President Mindy Benson said, “An example SUU should always look toward and see how we can be better together.”
Born in Cedar City, Snow moved to China in 1931 and lived there throughout World War II. She built lasting bridges between China and the United States through her lifelong work towards cross-cultural collaboration.
The Southern Utah Pacific Islander Student Association and SUU Ballroom team performed diverse cultural dances. Many T-birds shared songs in a variety of languages from around the world. Several students also shared their unique experiences on study abroad trips.
For Madison Snarr, a psychology student at SUU, her study abroad trip was transformative. She remarked that the experience yielded more than just academic credit: "Not only did I gain more confidence in myself and my abilities," she said, "but I also fostered friendships and relationships spanning across oceans, all of which are alive and well today."
With their respect and collaboration, T-birds continue Snow’s legacy by working together to share their heritage and art. Helen Foster Snow was influential to SUU’s International Student and Scholar Services, including international affairs.
