Dr. Gang Liu completed his undergraduate degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, followed by a master's degree in Computing, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science, all at the University of Utah. While in graduate school, his research focused on computational geometry, algorithms, and theoretical computer science. More specifically, Dr. Liu studied geometric optimization and coverage problems, designing efficient algorithms with theoretical guarantees. This work combined mathematical theory with practical algorithm design, laying the groundwork for his current research interests.
With his strong background in computational theory and a passion for helping students succeed, Dr. Liu joined the Department of Computer Science and Cybersecurity at Southern Utah University in August 2025.
Currently, Dr. Liu's research focuses on computational geometry and algorithm design. Specifically, he is tackling a complex puzzle known as "geometric half-plane coverage" - which involves finding the most efficient way to map and cover spaces using geometric lines. While theoretical mathematics proves that a highly efficient, near-instant computing solution is possible, no one has actually discovered the formula to achieve it yet. Dr. Liu hopes to bridge this gap by designing that elusive algorithm, a breakthrough that would significantly advance how computers solve complex spatial and optimization problems.
One of Dr. Liu's favorite parts of working at SUU is the close interaction with students and the supportive academic atmosphere. He especially enjoys helping students strengthen their problem-solving abilities and watching them gain confidence throughout the semester.
Beyond his work in the classroom, Dr. Liu is a highly respected contributor to the global scientific community. His research has been featured in premier international publications, including the Journal of Computational Geometry and Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications. Furthermore, because of his deep expertise, he is frequently invited to serve as a peer reviewer for leading academic journals and symposia, such as Theoretical Computer Science and the European Symposium on Algorithms. In this role, he helps evaluate and shape the next wave of major breakthroughs in the tech world.
Outside of work, Dr. Liu enjoys exploring the outdoors and taking on new adventures. Hiking, rock climbing, road biking, traveling, and other outdoor activities are some of his favorite hobbies.
SUU's Walter Maxwell Gibson College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (CSTEM) offers diverse programs that are supported by over 100 dedicated faculty and staff members focused on student-centered and experiential learning. The College hosts an annual Research Symposium and maintains specialized centers like the Ashcroft Observatory, the SUU Water Lab, the Frehner Museum of Natural History, and more.
