Writing Center Resources for Faculty
At the SUU Writing Center, we understand the critical role faculty play in fostering strong writing skills. This page outlines resources specifically designed to empower you in your teaching and contribute to greater student success across disciplines.
Faculty Services for Undergraduate Courses
Writing Center Orientation
Request a writing center tutor to come to your class and give an introduction to the writing center. Alternatively, you can bring your class to the writing center (BC 101) and have a tutor give you a tour of our space. Please contact the SUU undergraduate writing center at writingcenter@suu.edu.
Class Presentations and Group Mentoring
Tutors are also available to help students in your class as part of a writing session. This might include having the tutor give a short presentation on an aspect of the writing process and then leading students in a workshop. It might also include having tutors circulate through the class as students work on peer reviews. Please contact rosalyneves@suu.edu for more information.
Writing Fellows
A limited number of trained writing tutors are available to work with writers in professional disciplines. The Writing Fellows program pairs writing tutors with specific courses to work with students in those courses throughout the semester.
Assignment Review
Faculty can meet with us or email for feedback on your assignments, based on the most common questions or concerns we encounter in sessions. Faculty can also get assistance on writing assignments through the Writing Across the Curriculum program. Contact charlastrosser@suu.edu for more information.
Faculty Services for Graduate Courses
Virtual Graduate Writing Center orientation
Invite a graduate consultant to give your class a virtual introduction to the Graduate Writing Center. The consultant will briefly explain what writing resources are available through the GWC, how students can book appointments, and what students will gain from their sessions with us.
Assignment Review
Graduate faculty can meet with us or email for feedback on your assignments, based on the most common questions or concerns we encounter in sessions. Faculty can also get assistance on writing assignments through the Writing Across the Curriculum program. Contact charlastrosser@suu.edu for more information.
Recommendations for Faculty
Here are a few ways that faculty can support the Writing Center as we support writing instruction on campus:
Encourage visits
Please encourage rather than require students to visit the writing center. Extra credit is a great incentive! Students often return to meet with us again because they find their first session helpful.
Share assignments
Although we ask students for a description of their assignment on our booking form, we do not always get full assignment details, which limits our ability to provide feedback. If you do require students to visit the center for specific assignment, consider sharing your assignment with us in advance, so we can better understand the expectations and requirements and can ask you any questions if needed before we meet with your students.
Request Proof of Visit (if needed)
If you require student visits or offer extra credit, you may request a proof of visit form from our center. Please tell your students to select "yes" for proof of visit on our booking form, and our tutors will send you an email through our WCONLINE appointment system, confirming your student's visit and describing what they worked on during their session. We do not send proof of visit directly to students unless you as the professor request that we do so.
Recommend a student to become a Writing Center tutor
If you have students who are good writers and good at giving feedback to other students, consider recommending them to work at the writing center! You can contact the WC Director (rosalyneves@suu.edu ) or submit the tutor recommendation form.
