History of the SUU/BZI Youth Engineering Academy

The SUU BZI Youth Engineering Academy (YEA) was founded to introduce K-12 students to the exciting world of STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—through hands-on, project-based learning. It is a collaborative program between SUU, Southwest Technical College and and naming-sponsor BZI, combining academic expertise with real-world industry experience.

Since its inception, YEA has offered summer camps designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in students of all ages. Early camps focused on introducing younger students to basic engineering and computational concepts, while middle and high school programs expanded to include advanced projects in robotics, coding, 3D design, and other technology-driven fields.

Since its inception in 2023, the program has emphasized accessibility, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to explore STEM and consider future careers in these fields.

Today, the academy continues to grow, offering themed summer adventures, innovative camps at both SUU and Southwest Tech, and experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world applications. Each year, students leave the program with strengthened problem-solving skills, confidence, and an inspired interest in STEM, preparing them for future educational and career opportunities.
