On February 9th, 2017 we had our second speaker of our Convocation 2017 series. Our speaker was Cristina Ibarra and her topic was titled "Beyond the Wall: The Border as Spectacle and Performance.” She talked about how growing up on the border molded her into the woman she is today. She spoke about her childhood playgrounds were her father’s junkyards, or yonkes, on both sides of the US/Mexico border. She also spoke about her homemade Telenovela short film called "Dirty Laundry.” During the Convocation she also showed video clips of the new project she is working on called “The Infiltrators,” a documentary about people going undercover and intentionally getting deported to Mexico and how they were treated during that process. If you would like more information on Cristina’s work, please check out her website at http://www.cristinaibarra.com. Our next Convocation is February 16th, 2017 in The Great Hall at 11:30am and the speaker will be Gary Nabhan. Gary's topic for Thursday will be "Conservation You Can Taste: Restoring Biodiversity to the Farm and Table". We hope to see you guys there!
