Reflection

Derral Eves, YouTube influencer and executive Producer of the TV series The Chosen, spoke for their Alumni spotlight.

Eves is a Utah native and attended SUU where he earned his bachelor’s degree in communication with an emphasis in advertising and public relations in 1999.

Coming from humble beginnings, Eves understood from early on that “No one will stop you from learning except yourself.”

Sharing some advice on how to be the best version of yourself, Eves expressed, “You have to be excited at the end of the day to do what you love.”

Eves has over 78 billion views on YouTube, 34 billion views on Facebook, and 27 Gold Play Buttons which are awarded to YouTube channels who reach one million subscribers.

Inspiring all in the audience and specifically talking to the SUU students in attendance, Eves declared that in order to succeed in everything you do, “It starts with your own mindset and knowing what you can do” (Eves). Eves also cautioned, “Your biggest enemy is procrastination.”

Being a naturally curious person, Eves declared he constantly questions things and how they work. His work is never and will never be done. He declared, “I spend hours a day trying to make a better version of me” (Eves). With constant dreams and goals in mind, visions are common with Eves. Visions are a key component in being successful, for “Vision amplifies passion” (Eves).

Explaining his personal mechanism for being great and successful in life, Eves gave the audience some insights on how to also be great and successful in their own life. “Everyone should have a great mindset and goals. Goals must be SMART. Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Relevant. Time based” (Eves).

With one final message for the audience, Eves stated very clearly the importance of having mentors, specifically at SUU. “If you want to succeed at life, you have to surround yourself with the right people.” You must “Find other people you can learn from” (Eves).

His book, The YouTube Formula, describes how to succeed in growing your own company as an online presence and how to also succeed personally.
