Last Minute Spring Break Ideas

Spring Break 2016 is just days away and students are packing up their swimsuits, hiking boots, snowboards, and sunscreen for a stress-free week full of friends and fun. And you… have absolutely no idea how to make the most of this break. No worries my friend, all is not lost. No matter the budget, your break can still be memorable.
Based on your budget, here are some last minute plans to make Spring Break 2016 memorable.
Staycation in Cedar City, UT
$ Budget: <$50
For those not wanting to blow their money on a crazy Cancun-bound party, Cedar City has a lot to offer. Use this week to relax and spend time with friends. Start off with picking up a new hobby, like longboarding. Longboards can be rented at SUU Outdoors for $6, and here’s an insider tip, they don’t charge for days they’re closed. As in ALL of Spring Break. Six bucks to learn a new hobby, get out in the sun, and save some money on gas is a steal.
When nighttime rolls around, Cedar still has a lot to offer. The Cedar Bowling Center on the north side of town offers a game of bowling, an arcade, food and a bar for just a few bucks per game. Looking for a more laidback time? Try the Cedar City Historic Theater. Located on Main Street, this little theater offers tickets for a fraction of the price of other theaters. There isn’t any stadium seating, so you and your friends (or your date) will often have a football-sized theater to yourselves.
If leaving the house sounds like way too much energy to spend on your week off, there’s always the old reliable Netflix binge calling your name. With the new seasons of House of Cards and Daredevil being released as well as movies like Star Trek and Blue Mountain State, there is no shortage of Netflix and Chill material.
Mini Roadtrip/Day Trip in Southern Utah
$$ Budget: $50-$75
Why can’t summer just be here already?! Anyone who is chomping at the bit for swimsuit season only has to make a 45-minute drive to St. George. For those beach-born souls, Sand Hollow Reservoir is paradise dressed in red sand and teal water. Paddleboards and kayaks can be rented at SUU Outdoors (again ONE DAY prices). To those daring T-Birds wanting to take flight, cliff jumping is popular with locals, and Sand Hollow is just the place to do that. Water not your thing? That’s cool. The Reservoir also has sand dunes specifically for off-roading and ATVs.
The fun doesn’t have to end when the sunlight does. St. George has a wide selection of food for every budget and pallet. From Chipotle to Outback Steakhouse and endless dessert options, there’s practically a frozen yogurt or ice cream shop on nearly every corner and even two different crepe shops. The cherry on top? Most of these restaurants have deals on the Starving Student Card! After dinner head to Fiesta Fun for bowling, arcade, go karts, and laser tag.
For our Outside T-Birds, Zion National Park is just a short drive from St. George. Go hike Angel's Landing or Observation Point for a challenge or Emerald Pools for a stunning array of water pools and cliffs. You can even camp in the park, it’s much cheaper than a hotel and you’ll get the most out of your vacation.
Vacation in Las Vegas, NV
$$$ Budget: $200+
Want more of a vacation? Viva Las Vegas is a short two and a half hour drive away. The sleepless city has every type of food, entertainment, and attractions visitors could want.
During the day, head over to the Historic Arts District for some amazing thrift and antique shopping. The culture in the Arts District is definitely not your typical Las Vegas experience, and is a great break from the crowds of tourists. For a day in stunning rock features, drive out to Red Rock National Recreation Center for world-renown climbing and hiking. Spring Creek Canyon is a beautiful slot canyon that ends in a stunning waterfall you can climb inside of (yes, you read that correctly) or opt for one of the countless shorter hikes that end in a view of the whole Las Vegas valley.
When night-time rolls around, try walking the strip, starting at the tallest observation wheel in the world, the High Roller, which will be celebrating its first birthday this month. The view at the top shows a stunning view of Sin City, and each gondola fits about 30 people. Once you’re done with your ride, walk down to New York, New York, Paris, and the M&M's factory. Whenever dinner time rolls around, try out Dick’s Last Resort. Be warned, a good sense of humor is definitely required. This restaurant prides itself on the rudest wait staff possible. If you’re up for being called names and a good laugh, give Dick’s a shot! Otherwise, try the endless other options Vegas has to offer such as SkinnyFats or Ra Sushi.
Ready for more? Stoney’s Country Bar is open to anyone ages 18 and up, and has line-dancing, along with lessons, and a mechanical bull. There’s no doubt you’ll have a memorable weekend here.
There’s still hope for your Spring Break! No matter your budget or destination, there isn’t a need for a passport to have a memorable vacation. Don’t give up just yet, whether it’s a Netflix binge or Vegas Baby, make sure to give it your all and have a fun and memorable break!
