SUU 2016 College of Humanities and Social Sciences Valedictorian

Growing up on his family’s farm in Neola, Utah, Clay Crozier was taught the value of hard work, responsibility and perseverance. It was through his upbringing and work on the farm that Crozier learned to excel inside the classroom.
Now, after two years of attending Southern Utah University and studying political science, Crozier’s hard work is paying off as he is being recognized as the 2016 College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Valedictorian. He will be honored on April 30 at noon in the Centrum Arena during the college’s convocation.
Jim McDonald, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, said Crozier exemplifies the values of HSS in his work.
“Clay Crozier is a truly special individual,” McDonald said. “He was chosen from a field of truly exemplary students in the college this year. He is not only an outstanding student, but also a superb athlete and a stellar ambassador for all things SUU.”
Crozier originally started his collegiate career at a school in Colorado, where he was studying animal sciences. When he was taking a chemistry class for his animal science degree, he realized he wanted to change degrees.
Crozier and his friend created a chapter of Young Americans for Freedom in Colorado, which got him involved with politics and he found his love for political science.
After Crozier transferred to SUU in fall 2014, he participated in an intramural mock trial, where he decided he wanted to attend law school.
“I realized that political science was kind of my past time and I didn’t even know it,” he said. “Politics was something that came off as so intriguing which made me want to become an attorney.”
While at SUU, Crozier served in several leadership positions in a variety clubs and organizations across campus. Crozier has been an Executive Council Member at the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service, Roper on the SUU Rodeo Team, Vice President of College Republicans and Vice President of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
He also interned at the Utah State Capitol with Representative Ken Ivory during the 2015 legislative session.
When asked what words of advice he has to offer to incoming freshmen, Crozier said, “Work hard and learn, but make time to have fun. Also, surround yourself with really good people. Making those relationships is one of the things I have found to be the most beneficial to my success.”
After graduation Crozier will head to Washington D.C. and intern with U.S. Senator Mike Lee. In the fall, he will begin law school at the University of South Dakota.
