“Work first and play later,” says Scott Chapman, this year’s valedictorian for the School of Business.

Chapman earned a reputation at Southern Utah University as a student who never accepted anything less than his best performance. This was the attitude that led him to earn a 4.0 GPA and graduate as a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma business honors society.

A business management major, Chapman learned more than just management principles during his time at SUU, he learned how to enter the workforce.

“I had many professors coach me how to conduct myself in a job interview, how to network, and how to market myself online,”said Chapman. “While of course I appreciate all of the knowledge I have gained, the professors of the School of Business helped me and all of their students plan for our entrance into the job market. Every professor in the School of Business cared about my future.”

“Scott is an outstanding student,” said Greg Powell, chair of the Management Department. “He is very dedicated and always came to class prepared and added wonderful insights to our class discussions. Scott is the kind of student that can encourage other students to participate through his own thoughtful observations.”

With experiential learning at the heart of SUU, Chapman is particularly proud of his EDGE project where he created a small iOS game design business and became an Apple developer. He enjoyed the process so much he chose to work in the EDGE Center for his last semester.

Though his college experience was quite successful, it was not without its challenges for Chapman.

“My biggest struggle was making the transition from student to working professional. As mentioned above, I was largely able to overcome this struggle by applying what various professors had taught me concerning online job searching and networking. Doing so is how I was able to find my current employment.”

Chapman has been hired as a management trainee at Enterprise Rent-a-Car and is looking forward to climbing the ranks as he pursues his career in management.
