Kevin Tipton

Growing up in Springville, Utah, Kevin Tipton always had an interest in emergency medicine. When it was time to pursue a career, he wanted something that supported his interest. After receiving his bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing, and his doctorate in human services and healthcare administration, Tipton began teaching. He is now an associate professor of nursing at Southern Utah University, and works part-time as a nurse for Intermountain Health Care and the Iron County Youth Justice Center.

“Nursing has such a wide variety of opportunities,” said Tipton. “From the education side, it is rewarding to see students complete their nursing education and step into a field that is rewarding, yet challenging and can provide the greatest daily satisfaction. From the practice side, it is very rewarding to know you can make a difference in other’s lives.”

Tipton teaches the following classes:

  • NURS 4340 Nursing Wellness in Older Adults
  • NURS 4550 Leadership/Management in Nursing
  • NURS 4551 Leadership/Management for RN to BSN
  • NURS 4555 Leadership/Management in Nursing Lab

Tipton loves to teach leadership and management in nursing and emphasizes that followership fits in with equal importance to leadership and management. In nurses’ everyday actions, there are leaders and followers; if a nurse is a good follower, the leadership qualities fall into place.

Tipton loves SUU for the people, the support, the attitude, and campus. His proudest moment is standing in the convocation line-up at commencement, watching the graduates march on their way to receive what they worked so hard for.

“College, in general, is hard,” said Tipton. “It is a part of life, different than anything you have experienced. There are no shortcuts through it, and the next four-plus years are going to be hard. It will pay off, and the experience will make you a better person all around.”
