Former President of Layton Construction Speaks at SUU

On September 11th, 2018, Southern Utah University welcomed Alan S. Layton, former President of Layton Construction, as a speaker for the Entrepreneurship Speaker Series. The Entrepreneurship Speaker Series is a course on campus that invites various successful business owners and executives to present to the class each week. Speakers present on their accomplishments, challenges, and wisdom they’ve gained from their path to success.
During Layton’s presentation, he told SUU students about how his business has become successful, emphasized the importance of honesty in business, and reminded students to keep their priorities straight.
Layton had always dreamed of working with his father and founder of the business, Alan W. Layton. He earned an engineering degree from Brigham Young University in 1972 and began working with his father soon after graduation.
When Layton joined the company, Layton Construction was quickly expanding. The company was completing a variety of projects, including the renovation and expansion of Cougar Stadium at Brigham Young University. Only a few years later, Layton was asked by his parents to become the president of the company. Layton Construction continued to flourish and provided its services to many. One of the company’s proudest accomplishments came during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games when the company built office buildings, venues, health care centers, and warehouses to support the global event.
The company has become well known due to their reliable work and incredible service. Layton attributed their extensive growth to honesty in their work, which is reflected in their mission statement, “Construction With Integrity”. There are currently nine Layton Construction locations throughout the United States. In 2004, Alan S. Layton and his wife left the company to serve a mission for their church and passed on ownership to his brother, David S. Layton.
Layton emphasized the importance of having a good, strong character in his presentation and encouraged students to strive to be their best.
"The best part of Alan Layton’s discourse was when he mentioned that if something isn’t broken, break it,” said Dakota Denver, senior accounting major. “I then understood that we don’t have to be okay with the way things are. Why not just make them better?”
Layton’s words of wisdom resonated with many students, reminding them to never stop looking for ways to improve.
The Entrepreneurship Speaker Series is a one credit upper division class, designed to give students the opportunity to learn from successful business owners. There are no prerequisites and the class is open to any majors. All students are welcome to attend, even if they are not enrolled in the course. The class is held Tuesdays from 11:30-12:20 in the Dixie L. Leavitt Business Building in room 126.
