Inspirational Industry Leaders in Your Online Major Field

Nursing
2020 has been a year full of the unexpected. COVID-19 has altered the public school system, retail, food services, and almost every other industry in one way or another. But, 2020 has also illustrated time and time again the courage and sacrifice that nurses and healthcare professionals make to serve their patients on a daily basis. One of those nurses is Bonny Castillo, who was recognized by Time magazine as a top 100 influential person this year. Castillo directs the National Nurses United and the California Nurses Association. She is referred to as both a visionary and a leader.
“Known for her work advocating for nurses through labor movement and unions, Castillo was also among the first to draw national attention to the lack of adequate PPE to nurses on the frontlines. She was profiled by The New York Times for her fight to get nurses the PPE they needed to safely care for patients, and her efforts made a tremendous difference in highlighting the struggles that all healthcare workers faced.”
Despite the fact that there are hundreds, if not thousands of nurses that could have been highlighted as leaders in this industry, Castillo has set the bar particularly high.
Accounting
Accounting is a vast industry with hundreds of thousands of workers across the nation. While there are a variety of successful companies and individuals within this realm, Deloitte is a huge and successful company.
According to the Corporate Finance Institute, “Deloitte, the largest of the Big Four accounting firms in the US -- and in fact the largest accounting firm worldwide -- provides industry-leading assurance, consulting, tax, and risk and financial advisory services to many of the world’s most admired brands, including 80% of the Fortune 500 and more than 6,000 private and middle-market companies.”
Sports Conditioning and Performance
SUU offers a Master of Science in Sports Conditioning and Performance intended for coaches, physical educators, personal trainers, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and a multitude of other professionals in the exercise and sporting industry to enhance their knowledge and skillsets.
The University of Alabama’s football program has long been a leading force in the South Eastern Conference (SEC), as well as being nationally recognized for their success year-to-year in consistently winning games against respected opponents.
Dr. Matt Rhea, an alumni of SUU’s Bachelor of Science in Physical Education program, recently began working with Coach David Ballou as the Football Director of Sports Science at the University of Alabama:
“Rhea brings a scientific approach to the Crimson Tide’s tradition of hard work and dedication that is put towards getting stronger and faster. Working alongside David Ballou, the Tide’s director of sports performance, Rhea dives into the science of sports training that helps strip away pre-existing impediments to help Alabama’s student-athletes reach their fullest athletic potential.”
Ranging from data to nutrition, recovery and training--Rhea’s experiences and degree at SUU helped prepare him for receiving his Master’s of Science in Exercise Science and Physical Education, as well as his Doctorate of Philosophy in 2004 from Arizona State University.
“There was no question that from a sports science standpoint and from a conditioning standpoint they were light-years in advance of what a lot of people have done in their programs for a long, long time, which we’ve done the same thing for a long, long time, too,” said Nick Saban, Alabama Football Head Coach.
Rhea and Ballou are examples of finding innovative ways to improve the sports and conditioning aspect of athletics in today’s sporting industry.
