Mental health crises don't always happen during business hours. Fortunately, the 988 national mental health hotline is available 24/7. Through localized support, 988 connects callers across the US with local crisis centers so anyone can get help whenever they need it. It is a free and confidential service.

How do you use the 988 hotline?

There are several options for connecting with a counselor through the 988 crisis hotline: you can call, text, or chat.

Call

The 988 number can be called from any cellular device. A message will play that provides service selection for veterans, spanish speakers, or your local 988 support center. Once you are connected with a counselor, they will ask if you are safe. Then, they will ask questions to better understand your situation, offer guidance, and connect you with resources that may be helpful.

Text

The 988 number also has text message support. After agreeing to the terms of service, you will be sent a brief survey to help the live counselor determine how to help you. Counselors through the text line offer the same resources that one would receive over the phone.

Chat

If you do not have access to a cellular device, you can still access the helpline through the 988 resource website. After selecting “chat” on the website, a new window with a survey similar to the one provided when texting 988 will appear. Again, the services provided through the website’s chat function are the same one would receive when calling 988.

Conclusion

Like 911, these three digits save lives all across the US. Whether you need it for yourself, a friend, or a loved one, 988 is a vital resource that everyone should keep in mind. For more information, please visit 988lifeline.org. For SUU-specific resources, visit suu.edu/mentalhealth.
