Headshot of Janet HodnettSouthern Utah University Mechanical Engineering Professor, Janet Hodnett, brings both experience and passion to the University. Hodnett earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University, followed by an M.S. in Systems Engineering through a special partnership between Missouri University of Science and Technology and the University of Southern California. Her graduate studies focused on Systems Engineering, an area that emphasizes understanding how complex components interact within larger systems. In addition to her academics, Professor Hodnett spent 20 years working at Boeing, gaining deep industry experience before joining SUU in 2022.

Currently, Professor Hodnett is involved in a senior capstone research project focused on developing a compact, two-chamber pulsatile pump to study mechanically driven flow and pressure generation. The research examines how time-varying pump motion, valve timing, membrane deformation, and fluid behavior work together to produce controllable pressure and flow waveforms. This hands-on project allows students to engage directly with complex mechanical systems and applied research.

What she enjoys the most about working at SUU is the balance of freedom and impact. Professor Hodnett values the opportunity to help students in practical, meaningful ways while having the flexibility to implement creative ideas, such as hands-on design labs and field-based learning experiences. Supportive colleagues and engaged, capable students make SUU a place where strong teaching is encouraged and innovative ideas are welcomed.

Throughout her career, Professor Hodnett has received several notable honors, including the Scowcroft Award (2022), which recognizes excellence among military and civilian personnel in the ICBM, space, and C3I communities. She has also been honored with the Boeing Pride Award in 2004 and 2017, the SUU Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award (2023), and the SUU Influencer Award (2025).

Outside of work, Professor Hodnett enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, especially exploring the trails around Cedar City. She appreciates the area’s history, small town atmosphere, and quiet stories that make Southern Utah unique. Being a mom is also a central part of her life that deeply influences how she approaches each day.
