SUU Education buildingIn the world of education, the "Science of Reading" isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a movement. As data suggests many students aren't hitting the reading benchmarks necessary for long-term academic success, Southern Utah University (SUU) is stepping up to be part of the solution.

Through SUU K-12 programs, educators can earn 5000-level graduate continuing education credits for completing LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training. This initiative isn't just about professional growth; it's about rewarding the hard work teachers put into mastering literacy instruction.

Credit Opportunities at a Glance

Whether you are focused on early childhood or school leadership, there is a pathway for you to earn credit. SUU offers these credits at a fraction of the cost of traditional graduate tuition, making this one of the most affordable ways to receive a return on investment for career advancement.

Credits Available per Training Type
Training Type Total Credits Available
LETRS Reading and Literacy 12 Credits
LETRS Early Childhood Literacy 6 Credits
LETRS Admin Literacy 1 Credit

(Please note, unfortunately, those in the Clark County School District are ineligible for SUU credit for LETRS.)

Why Enroll?

Beyond the classroom impact, these credits serve as a powerful tool for career longevity.

  • Lane Changes & Pay Raises: These 5000-level graduate credits can be applied toward salary advancement in most Utah partner districts.
  • Recruitment & Retention: For districts and schools, offering university credit is a premier way to encourage and reward teachers for participating in high-intensity professional development.
  • Legacy Training: Already finished your LETRS units? You can still get credit! Simply register and submit your certificates of completion. To receive credit, you must submit your completion certificates showing a passing score of 80% or higher for each unit.

More Than Just Literacy: S.T.E.M. Endorsements

The opportunities at SUU don't end with literacy. We are currently collaborating with SUU’s SPARC (Sponsored Programs, Agreements, Research, and Contracts) office and the State Office of Education to offer S.T.E.M. endorsements. Thanks to grant funding, these endorsement classes are provided at no charge for participants. Like the LETRS credits, these are 5000-level graduate credits designed to elevate your expertise without the financial burden.
