Currently living in Richfield, Utah, Angela Wilmot is following her dream of educating young minds. She has taught math as well as family and consumer science (FACS) at Red Hills Middle School for 18 years, and served as the head of the math department for the past 12 years.

“I think middle schoolers are the best,” she says. “They are funny, independent, creative, dream big, and have lots of good energy. My favorite part of teaching is interacting with the students; getting to know them and their hopes for the future.”

She teaches a group of students to compete in MathCounts competitions, a nationwide middle school mathematics competition held in various places in the United States. She has taken her students to the state level competition four times.

A professional highlight for Angela was receiving an all-inclusive scholarship from Honeywell to attend the Space Camp for Educators in Huntsville, Alabama. There, she was able to network with teachers from around the world and explore space technology. Armed with this knowledge and experience, Angela seeks to inspire her students and gives them hands-on, real world examples of math.

Originally from Provo Utah, where she graduated from Provo High in 2001, she was drawn to SUU because of the small class sizes and the education program. Angela especially loved the opportunities she found through SUU’s elementary education program, saying, “Spending time in elementary classrooms really helped me to know that teaching was the right career choice for me.”

Apart from academics, she was a resident assistant in Juniper Hall for two years and says that being an RA helped build self-esteem and leadership skills.

“Attending SUU was one of my favorite experiences. I would do it again,” she said.

Angela named SUU faculty members Marty Larkin for supporting her after she graduated and Sage Platt (’70) for helping her overcome her fear of public speaking. Sage also helped Angela make her first quilt. She loved quilting so much that she developed it into a business, Stitch N Together on Etsy. In her free time Angela reads, quilts, and spends time outdoors.
