Faculty Senate President-Elect Nominations

The Vice-President (President-elect) serves for one year (beginning this fall) and then becomes the Senate President during the following academic year. After serving as Senate President, the elected faculty member continues on the Executive Committee as Past-President for one more year. Faculty Senate Presidents have an opportunity to shape the direction of SUU for three years.

The duties of the Vice-President include:

  • Serving on the Executive Committee.
  • Serving as a non-voting member in the senate.
  • Attending meetings of the Board of Trustees.
  • Other responsibilities as deemed appropriate.

To see a full list of responsibilities of the Faculty Senate President, Past-President and President-Elect, visit our By-laws.

The Vice-President receives a course load reduction of two classes (6 credit hours) for the academic year. The Faculty Senate President receives a course load reduction of four courses for the academic year (12 credits hours). The Faculty Senate Past-President receives a course load reduction of two classes (6 credit hours).

This past year the Faculty Senate has discussed and put forth recommendations on topics and policies concerning: professional responsibilities, program discontinuance, free speech, and academic freedom, among many others. The Senate also serves to represent faculty within several working groups and committees across campus, including the work of complying with state legislation. It is an important time to get involved at SUU and take part in guiding this institution forward.

For this first stage of the election, we accept nominations for faculty members you feel would be effective in this leadership role. In addition, you are welcome to nominate peers inside and outside of your departments or nominate yourself for this position. Faculty members must be tenured and be either current or former faculty senators to be eligible to serve. Please review the list of past/current senators from now through 2007; I hope that this list will assist you in identifying who is eligible to serve as the incoming Faculty Senate President.

Nominations are open until 5 pm on Friday, March 7, 2025.

Each nominee will be contacted to determine their interest in running. Then, a ballot will be distributed containing the names of all interested individuals to the entire university faculty. A second ballot will follow with only the two individuals receiving the highest votes.
