SUU to Host International Film Festival

International Students in National ParkThe Department of Languages and Philosophy will host The International Film Festival, Cinematic Dialogues February 6 through 17. Screenings are free and open to the public, and films will be subtitled. Participating languages include French, Spanish, German and Mandarin.

Screenings begin each evening at 5 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Center Theatre, Room 161D. Offering unique insight from field experience, related experts will introduce each film and lead a post-film discussion.

“This inaugural film festival is designed to serve both the SUU campus and larger community,” stated the organizers of the festival. “It will provide ample material for discussion about the influence of culture and promote other inclusive events that highlight diversity and promote awareness and acceptance.”

The following films will be featured:

February 6 La Cour de Babel/School of Babel, French, introduced by Gateway Preparatory Academy Teacher Erin Waldman, a graduate of SUU.

February 8 Las Marthas/The Marthas, Spanish, introduced by the filmmaker, Cristina Ibarra.

February 10 Die Mörder Sind Unter Uns/The Murderers are Among Us, German, introduced by German Professor Corey Twitchell.

February 13 Balzac et la Petite tailleuse Chinoise/Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, French and Mandarin, introduced by Mandarin Professor Qingping Liu.

February 15 El Club/The Club, Spanish, introduced by Philosophy Professor Kristopher Phillips.

February 17 Phoenix, German, introduced by Art History Professor Andrew Marvick.

Filmmaker Ibarra will also be featured as SUU Convocations speaker February 9, 11:30 a.m. in the Gilbert Great Hall.
