Old Main ArchiveFor the community of Southern Utah University, the tale of the founding of the institution has been an inspiration. It is a story of heroic acts and selflessness, which can be depicted in the 2015 docudrama Back Up the Mountain.

SUU will honor 120 years of history during the annual Founders Celebration from March 21 to March 28. Events range from a leadership speaker to Lunch on the Main to a lively concert and are open to students, faculty, staff and the community.

The week starts on Tuesday, March 21 with the Howard R. Driggs Memorial Lecture at 11:30 a.m. in the Gilbert Great Hall of the Hunter Conference Center. The lecture will feature Dr. Quintard Taylor presenting The Challenge of the Racial Frontier: Four Centuries of African American History in the American West, 1600 to 2000.

Following on Wednesday, March 22 at noon Dr. Joshua Fredenburg, a nationally acclaimed speaker and author, will present Be the Change You Wish to See in the World in the Sharwan Smith Student Center. This leadership session is open to the community.

Thursday evening there will be a Founders Reception, along with a Founders Dinners & Awards starting at 6:00 p.m. in the Hunter Conference Center.

On Friday, March 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. students have the chance to meet alumni as they tell stories of SUU’s founding during Lunch on the Main. The event takes place all over campus, with different food at each of the six locations - Old Main, Sharwan Smith Student Center, Centurium, Old Sorrel, Library Plaza, and the Gerald R. Sherratt Library lobby.

Old MainFollowing Lunch on the Main, SUU will participate in Remembering Dr. Gerald R. Sherratt from 7 to 9 p.m in the Huntsman Reading Room on the second floor of the Sherratt Library. The event will allow the campus to view "Jerry stories" shared, heard and recorded. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Sherratt Library.

The weeks final celebration is a concert event featuring Dan + Shay, a Top 40s American Country duo in the Centrum Arena. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m on Tuesday, March 28.
