Colleges of Distinction recognizes SUU’s Nursing Program Known for being the best public nursing program in Utah, Southern Utah University’s Department of Nursing has received specialized recognition this year from Colleges of Distinction. Honored as a College of Distinction for its high-impact approach to education, SUU received additional recognition in nursing for a curriculum that is not only comprehensive in course material, but also in practical and soft skills development.

“The nursing program at SUU provides students with the skills necessary to succeed in the healthcare environment,” said Dean Camille Thomas, dean of the College of Health Sciences at SUU. “Faculty are dedicated to instilling high expectations for academic success and excellence with compassion and tolerance.”

As a guide for college-bound students, Colleges of Distinction conducts a detailed review of the programs offered through the University, and this year SUU was selected as a College of Distinction because of the exemplary work of the nursing, engineering, education and business programs.

The nursing program offers a learning-centered education ensuring that graduates have the abilities to be successful, excellent, professional nurses. The department emphasizes patient safety, ethical decision making, civic responsibility and professional excellence.

“I am not surprised SUU Nursing is recognized as a College of Distinction,” said Austin Marshall, recent graduate of SUU’s Nursing Program. “Staff members spent countless hours after class coaching me through difficult material and procedures. I performed skill after skill until I became comfortable and thorough in each one. I remember most developing friendships and building character through instructor guided discussions. I always felt this program genuinely desired my success.”

The department requires hands-on pedagogically sound learning experience with state-of-the-art health care equipment, guaranteeing that graduates will be able to successfully enter the nursing practice as technically proficient nurses. The program is rigorous and competitive but rewards students for their hard work with a commitment to excellence in education.

“As a new ICU nurse with little medical background, I have felt uncomfortable on occasion but never incapable,” said Marshall. “That is what SUU Nursing does. It meets you where you are and lifts you to practice as a safe and competent nurse. It is an environment where success is inevitable. In my eyes, SUU Nursing deserves this recognition and more.”

In addition to the nursing department, SUU’s College of Health Sciences is full of dedicated departments and quality programs that provide innovative education effectively meeting the needs of students and the regional community.
