S4 Competition winner, Crypto WhalesEarlier this semester, Southern Utah University’s Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business hosted the annual Opportunity Quest competition. This event included pitch competitions for entrepreneurial ideas and hosted seven teams competing for a grand prize of $1,500.

“A record number of SUU students competed in Opportunity Quest this year, and the pitches were some of the best we've ever seen,” said Dr. Tyler Stillman, director of SUU’s Larry H. & Gail Miller Center for Entrepreneurship. “We saw a huge range of businesses, including some on the cutting-edge of blockchain technology, a mental-health positive dance studio, a new and unique service for those grieving, and many other entrepreneurial endeavors.”

This year’s Opportunity Quest winners were the team behind Crypto Games, LLC, Matthew Matheson and Shadrac Reyes. Their flagship game, Crypto Whales, is a fun crypto spin off of Monopoly Deal and Cover Your Assets. In the game, players compete with family and friends to collect the most cryptocurrency and become the largest “Crypto Whale” while avoiding other players' attacks and successfully navigating various market events.

“SUU has talented students,” said Matheson and Reyes. “It was so fun to hear all the amazing business ideas that are being developed by fellow T-birds. We would not be here without the support and mentorship we have received through the Miller Entrepreneurship Center. I’m thankful for all the support we have been given and am very excited to represent SUU and all the amazing student-owned businesses that have been produced by its students!”

The pair want to shout out their main mentor, Kristina Thomas, for helping them gain experience in e-commerce business, lean startups, and product development through the SUU Hope Corp Program. Tyler Stillman, Landon Smith, the Small Business Development Center, and the other members of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship Program are also credited with helping the team reach their goals and creating a fantastic opportunity for students to share their ideas.
