SUU Opens Virtual Reality and Augmented Innovation Studio

Southern Utah University is proud to announce the launch of its new Virtual Reality and Augmented Innovation Studio, which will open in March. This cutting-edge facility is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in the creation of virtual reality and augmented reality content. The studio is equipped with state of the art technology, including VR and AR headsets and high-end computers and software.
Last year during winter break, a group of faculty members wrote a grant proposal for the innovation grant awarded by Utah System of Higher Education (USHE). This summer, USHE notified SUU that our campus received close to a one million dollar grant to implement a VR/AR Innovation Studio and classroom on campus. The participants who collaboratively wrote the grant were Dr. James Brandt, Dr. Richard Cozzens, Dr. Jeffery Cowley, Aundrea Frahm, Benjamin Kirkby, and Dr. Brandon Wiggins. This Virtual Reality Studio provides students with opportunities to explore the possibilities of this exciting, new medium. Whether they’re interested in gaming, film and animation, or architectural visualizations, students will be able to develop their skills and create compelling, immersive content.
In addition to the debut of the new space, SUU will host their first annual XR Southern Summit, a conference aimed at exploring the latest advancements and opportunities in the fields of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in relation to education. This conference will bring together experts and enthusiasts from various industries and universities to share their knowledge and experiences, and to discuss the applications of VR and AR in higher education and the classroom setting.
The conference will be held on the campus of Southern Utah University and is open to students, educators, industry professionals, and anyone interested in learning about VR and AR technologies. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced professional, the XR Southern Summit is an opportunity to gain knowledge, connect with others, and explore the exciting world of VR and AR.
