As Utah continues to face a growing demand for qualified teachers, Southern Utah University (SUU) hopes to remain at the forefront of addressing this need. The University has long been a leader in teacher education, preparing the next generation of educators with a hands-on approach that sets graduates up for success.
In order to go into student teaching, all Elementary Education students are required to first go through a series of courses called Elementary “Block.” The Block consists of five courses taken simultaneously in the semester before student teaching. Students also spend time in three different practicum settings, alongside the five courses. This is a rigorous and immersive experience designed to give education students hands-on training in real classrooms before they graduate. It provides aspiring teachers with the skills, confidence, and mentorship necessary to excel in the classroom.
Dallee Peterson, a Fall 2024 Elementary Education graduate, credits her experience in The Block, and the encouragement from her professors, especially Teacher Education Professor, Jamie Hamblin, for giving her the confidence to apply for an intimidating teaching position.
“While I didn’t get the job, I gained so much valuable experience,” said Peterson. “I now have interview skills, relationships with the district, and application history—things I wouldn't have if I hadn’t applied. I owe Jamie for that and my newfound confidence that has me ready to apply again soon!”
Aubree Neal, another 2024 graduate, emphasized how The Block transformed her perspective on teaching.
“I have always been excited to be a teacher, but The Block semester taught me what a teacher means to me and why I was meant to be one,” said Neal. “The support I received from mentors like Torrie Rice, Jamie Hamblin, and Mallory Poole helped me feel confident and capable throughout student teaching."
Beyond practical experience, SUU’s education faculty are known for their strong commitment to student success. Kaci McKinney, a senior in the program, shared how the relationships she built with her professors have positively impacted her education.
“I can honestly say that in all of the classes I have taken at SUU, every professor knew my name and genuinely cared about my well-being,”said McKinney. “That kind of support is rare, and it has shaped the kind of educator I am becoming.”
The Block provides future educators with essential tools and hands-on experience to prepare them for the classroom. From classroom management strategies to professional communication with parents, the program equips students with all the confidence and skills needed to succeed. Through the diverse practicum settings, students apply what they learn in real-world classrooms and refine their teaching techniques while building meaningful relationships with students.
As Utah continues to face a growing demand for qualified teachers, SUU hopes to remain at the forefront of addressing this need. The Teacher Education faculty at Southern Utah University are committed to developing and nurturing educators who value all people in the communities they serve. Such professional educators will act as agents of positive change and will embolden students to do the same.
