Adventure awaits at the University of the ParksCedar City, UT  – Students, faculty, and staff explored the world’s best backyard at the first annual University of the Parks Expo. This exciting event took place  on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the SUU Ballroom.

The Expo showcased the wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities available to the SUU community, and highlighted the incredible public lands surrounding the University including Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. Attendees had the chance to connect with local outdoor recreation agencies and SUU outdoor organizations, discover new adventures, and learn about responsible stewardship of these valuable resources.

“Our goal is really to bring more attention to the University of the Parks brand in the hopes that more students and faculty alike take advantage of the opportunities for learning and recreation on all the public lands around SUU,” said Jason Burton, Undergraduate Program Director of Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism.

The event featured interactive experiences, including a trivia challenge and outdoor skills challenges, with prizes for participants to use on their next outdoor excursion. This was a fantastic opportunity for both seasoned adventurers and those new to outdoor recreation to discover the many benefits of spending time in nature.

The University of the Parks Expo was the product of the ORPT 4740 class, which focuses on the organization and administration of outdoor recreation. These students took the lead in planning and executing every detail of the event, demonstrating their commitment to promoting outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.

The organizers hope that this inaugural event will become an annual tradition, further solidifying SUU’s connection to the surrounding natural wonders. They encourage other SUU departments interested in participating in future expos to contact Jason Burton.

The Bachelor of Science in Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism at SUU is an interdisciplinary program blending natural sciences, communication, and hospitality. This program prepares students for diverse careers in outdoor recreation, education, and tourism, providing a foundation in management, environmental stewardship, and leadership skills.
