CEDAR CITY, UT – Four recent Master of Athletic Training (MAT) graduates from Southern Utah University (SUU) – Adrianna Fowler, Morgan Mersola, Alex Roberto, and Noah Smith – recently presented their original research studies at National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Clinical Symposia & Expo. This prestigious opportunity underscores the rigorous academic preparation and strong research focus embedded within SUU's MAT program.
These dedicated students each submitted abstracts of their research to the NATA Research and Education Foundation's Free Communications Program committee. Their work underwent a competitive selection process, ultimately earning them a coveted spot to present at the national symposium. The abstracts for their studies have been published in the current issue of the Journal of Athletic Training Volume 60: Issue 6s.
Most of the studies utilized the University's resources, including specialized software, equipment, and access to test subjects. One of the studies further extended its reach through a valuable collaboration with a local physical therapy clinic and a practicing physical therapist, showcasing real-world application and community engagement.
"SUU provides a curriculum design that requires the students to grow and develop the skills to engage in the research process," said Professor Nathan Slaughter. “The students are provided with a faculty mentor who helps to lead and guide them through conducting any of a number of different research options that could include an original study, which is what these students chose to do.”
This opportunity at the NATA Clinical Symposia & AT Expo is a significant milestone for these emerging athletic training professionals, offering them a platform to share their original findings with a national audience and contribute to the broader field of athletic training.
