Picture of Matthew Pedersen. Matthew Pedersen, an accomplished costume design professor at Southern Utah University, was recently recognized by his alma mater, the University of Central Missouri (UCM), as one of the "10 Under 40" honorees. Pedersen has used his notable professional experiences in the world of costume design to effectively prepare his students to tell their own stories through their craft.

"My mantra is: Innovative design does three things, pays reverence to the past, feels incredibly useful and present, and looks boldly into the future," said Pedersen.

To qualify for UCM's "10 Under 40" recognition, honorees must be 39 years old or younger and be making notable contributions to their communities and field of study.

Pedersen lists the following as his most significant achievements while at SUU: convincing students that they are artists-- not just workers, creating a classroom where all students belonged, overhauling the curriculum, raising design standards, and helping students secure jobs they didn't think they could.

"But mostly," said Pedersen, "I've been proud of giving students the guts to say something with their work - loudly!"

In addition to his work as an assistant professor of theatre costume design and technology, Pedersen has also worked as a freelance costume designer and wardrobe stylist for companies including ESPN, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Central City Opera, and Netflix.

Pedersen's career achievements are rivaled only by his devotion to his students. The students are always his favorite part of teaching at SUU.

"They're raw and brilliant, and they come from places nobody writes musicals about," said Pedersen. "They work hard. They're kind. They've got something to say, even when they think they don't."
