With 27 years of experience in the geosciences, Veach is well-equipped to begin this new role. As State Geologist, Veach will collaborate with state and federal programs to preserve the health of the environment and the public.

Toby Vinson, director of the Division of Energy, Mineral, and Land Resources, said, “DEQ (the Department of Environmental Quality) is confident Dwain’s extensive experience and dedication to the geosciences will greatly benefit the state of North Carolina.”

Veach graduated from SUU as a physical science major, specializing in physics and geology. His hard work and extensive education have led to a successful career in geology. Through his development of geologic models, geologic mapping analysis, and many other accomplishments, Veach has acquired a unique skillset that will enable him to serve his state well.

“Dwain Veach brings a wealth of leadership and experience in the geosciences field to the State Geologist role,” said DEQ Secretary Reid Wilson. “I’m grateful for his dedication and service to the people of our state.”

Dwain’s wife, Lisa Veach, also said “His career in geology — and the strong foundation he received at SUU — have led him to this remarkable achievement.”

The SUU geosciences program prepares students to reach new heights through lab-based learning and participation in active research. Cedar City’s access to landscapes, geology, and cultures of southern Utah allows students to acquire unique hands-on experience.
