For Southern Utah University student AJ Newbury, pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre has been a transformative experience filled with mentorship, growth, and the discovery of community.
Originally from Auburn, Washington, Newbury first discovered SUU while researching theater programs with his family. When we found out about SUU’s partnership with the Utah Shakespeare Festival, it felt like the perfect fit.
That connection became even more meaningful when Newbury learned about SUU’s Utah Shakespeare Festival Fellowship, which allows students to gain hands-on professional experience while pursuing a degree. “It’s not just an internship,” Newbury said. “You’re part of the company and treated as an equal. The experience prepares you for a real career in theater.”
In addition to performing in productions like Sweet Charity, Three Sisters, and Pippin, Newbury has found deep inspiration from his professors. “The mentorship here really instilled in me a sense of self-worth and confidence I didn’t have before,” Newbury said. “Every professor wants you to succeed.”
When Newbury received news he was given the fellowship opportunity, he said his professors were the first to tell him, “‘We knew you’d be here.”
That sense of support extends beyond the classroom at SUU. He describes the theater community as incredibly close.
“The people I study with are the same people I now get to work with professionally,” Newbury shared. “It’s a special environment.”
As he prepares for graduation, Newbury plans to continue acting and hopes to return home to the Seattle theater scene. For T-Birds who are looking for advice, Newbury encourages everyone to get involved and enjoy every moment. At SUU, you’ll find yourself surrounded by people who see what you can become and are eager to help you reach your full potential.
