Recently, two SUU students and their bandmates traveled to St George to compete in Utah Tech’s annual battle of the bands. The Cedar City-based band, Black Cat Parade won judges’ choice for first place with their original song, “The Lonely Ones” and their cover of the song “Elephant" by Tame Impala.
“I think we played very well,” Porter Burt, the band’s drummer and SUU sophomore, said. “It was a lot of fun.”
Together since 2021, the Black Cat Parade consists of SUU students, Porter Burt and Ike Petersen, and their bandmates, Ethan Bulloch and Ben Sagers. Based mainly in the Alternative Rock genre, the band released their first single “Scared of You” in 2023. Throughout the years, they have played many shows together, released several songs, and learned how to grow together as a band.
Any well-functioning team knows how important it is to progress together, regardless of setbacks or trials. The Black Cat Parade members are no different, demonstrating their resilience in their consistent efforts to grow. Fresh off their win at SUU’s Battle of the Bands last year, they decided to compete at Utah Tech’s much larger Battle of the Bands this year, and brought home the prize and gained an invaluable experience.
“If you’re passionate about it, the music should come first,” Burt said. “If you don’t have a lot of people at a show, don’t let it discourage you. Keep going even when it seems difficult.”
The Black Cat Parade will continue to share their musical talents with Cedar City and beyond. Their original music can be found on Spotify and Apple music under the name Black Cat Parade.
With their stellar programs, SUU’s Student Life Enhancement Committee provides opportunities for T-birds to explore their interests and hobbies through student feedback and community engagement.
