Dr. Jacob Dean Honored with STEM Outreach Award

CEDAR CITY, UT – The Walter Maxwell Gibson College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at Southern Utah University is proud to announce that Dr. Jacob Dean, associate professor of chemistry, was honored with the STEM Outreach Award for SUU. Dr. Dean was presented the award at the Southern Utah STEM Awards, cosponsored by the four public institutions of higher education in southern Utah.

The ceremony celebrated excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education across the region. SUU Provost Shauna Mendini conferred the award and highlighted Dr. Dean’s unique ability to translate complex scientific concepts into community-wide inspiration.

"Dr. Jacob Dean is a cornerstone of scientific outreach and education in Southern Utah," said Provost Mendini during the ceremony. "Whether advising high schoolers on state-level science fair projects or guiding peers, Dr. Dean embodies the spirit of the STEM Outreach Award through his tireless dedication to curiosity and excellence."

Dr. Dean’s work to bridge the gap between academia and the community is profound. His impact over the past year has been felt by students and families alike.
One of the most visible examples of this outreach is the "Lasers and Lights" show. As a featured presenter for the SUU STEM Center for Teaching & Learning’s Wonder Wednesday series, Dr. Dean transformed high-level physics into an accessible and awe-inspiring experience for guests of all ages.

Beyond the stage, Dr. Dean plays a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of innovators through the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Serving as a long-standing judge at the SUU-sponsored regional qualifier, he identifies and mentors the region’s top talent. His guidance is instrumental in helping southern Utah’s best students successfully transition their research and ideas to the international stage.

Dr. Dean also strengthens the academic community through his work with the Utah State Science Olympiad. He provides indispensable contributions by designing rigorous, interactive assessments and mentoring fellow faculty members on the nuances of student competition.
Dr. Dean’s commitment to the next generation of scientists ensures that SUU remains a leader in regional STEM education, fostering a culture where scientific inquiry is both rigorous and reachable.
