The start of a new school year comes with change and growth - you're a year older and a year wiser.  With so many resources on campus, now is the time to utilize different opportunities, excel at your studies and become a more dedicated Thunderbird. Here are 10 simple goals for students at Southern Utah University.

  1. Meet new people - Join one of the 170 clubs and organizations on campus or start your own club. Attend one of the many SUUSA events during Homecoming Week and throughout the semester.
  2. Brush up on your study skills - The Gerald R. Sherratt Library gives students access to 350,000 books and 13 study rooms. The Student Success Tutoring & Study Lab has tutors available 60 hours a week specializing in 18 different subjects. Use the resources to stay ahead in your classes this semester.
  3. Have more school spirit - An easy way to show your school spirit is by participating in Red Fridays. Cheer on the T-Birds by attending athletic events (here is the schedule), free with a valid student ID.
  4. Become more politically aware - Visit the new Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service during one of its 150 yearly events. Register to vote and learn about the different candidates running for public office.
  5. Learn more about art, music and culture – Visit the new Beverley Center for the Arts, which houses the Southern Utah Museum of Art (free to students) and the Utah Shakespeare Festival (student discount pass available). You can also attend productions put on by students in the College of Performing and Visual Arts, including: theatre arts, dance, music concerts, and art galleries. All on-campus events are free to students, faculty, and staff with a valid ID.
  6. Volunteer in the community - The Community Engagement Center offers many opportunities throughout the year for students to volunteer, many of which occur on a weekly basis. Students can participate in mini breaks to provide service around the state, country and world.
  7. Strengthen your communication skills - If you want that next paper to be stronger, visit one of the 22 tutors in the Writing Center. If you have trouble speaking in front of the class, visit the Speech and Presentation Center.
  8. Find adventure outside - SUU Outdoors offers cheap gear rental and free guided trips to surrounding national and state parks.
  9. Get active - If you aren’t quite ready to adventure outdoors, the J.L. Sorenson offers free open recreation to students including: swimming, racquetball, basketball, volleyball, track, and rock climbing.
  10. Prepare for graduation – Visit your Student Success Advisor to make sure you are on track to graduation. If you are graduating in the next couple semesters, visit the Career Center to get help finding a job or to refresh your resume.
As the school year starts, challenge yourself to become a more well-rounded student. Hopefully this list encourages you to grow while taking advantage of free resources available to students.

Good luck with your school year goals!
