What can I do with a degree in exercise science?One of the hardest aspects of obtaining a higher education degree is deciding what major to pursue. When making this decision it’s beneficial to consider what you are passionate about. For example: Are you passionate about health and fitness? Does helping people reach their fitness goals sound exciting? If so then consider a degree in exercise science.

The exercise science degree at Southern Utah University is designed to provide students with knowledge and training that qualifies them for additional education through graduate studies and prepares them for careers related to the fitness, wellness, and sport industries.

Here are a few careers possible in the field of exercise science:

Athletic Trainers

Professionals in this career are certified to work in the field of sports medicine helping athletes to prevent or recover from injuries and perform at their maximum capacity. Other parts of the job description include creating nutrition and exercise plans, working with coaches and maintaining records on athletes.

Personal Trainer

Personal trainers work with individuals or small groups to improve the health and fitness of clients. They usually work in gyms, or fitness clubs and are required to create fitness plans around the specific needs of their clients. Similar careers include health fitness specialists.

Program Coordinator/Director

Individuals in these careers are hired to manage wellness programs and often coordinate with other fitness professionals to ensure the success of the program and meet the goals set by their employer. Program directors might work for community centers or gymnasiums so they need to be able to create different programs for a wide range of clients from children to senior citizens.

Club Manager

This career is similar to program directors, but club managers focus more on the general success of the training program, rather than the details. Club managers oversee the health club’s team of fitness associates and are responsible for general running of the club, including equipment functionality, cleanliness, and club membership.

Graduate Degrees

T-Birds who graduate with a bachelor's degree in exercise science are competitive applicants for entrance into graduate school in exercise science as well as other related degrees like physical therapy, occupational therapy, and chiropractic therapy.
