How to study for an online testAs a new student to online learning, you may be wondering how to study for an online test this semester. Though taking a test online is different than in the traditional classroom setting, preparing and studying for a test in either format is similar.

Here are three tips for success when studying for online tests.

Tip 1 - Study even if the test is open-book

First, if the test is open-book or open-note don’t give into the idea that studying is unnecessary. Just like a traditional class, reading the course materials, studying up or re-watching lectures, and getting together with fellow classmates to go over content can be extremely beneficial prior to taking the test. Remember, time limits and a lack of understanding can prove to be detrimental if you haven’t done the preparation up front.

The bestschools.org advises students, “If you go into it with only your open book to guide you, the lack of preparation will show in your rushed responses and the beads of sweat dripping down your forehead. Use the open book as a reference. The good stuff should already be in your brain.”

Tip 2 - Don’t wait until the last minute

Next, don’t wait until the last minute to study for the test. Procrastinating only makes test-taking more stressful and may leave you feeling guilty for your lack of effort in the prior weeks and days. As the test approaches, create a study schedule to stay accountable. Doing so will help you retain the information better, rather than cramming everything into one day or hour in hopes of being successful. Giving your mind the time it needs to understand difficult topics can prove to be beneficial in many ways.

Tip 3 - Know what you need to complete the test

Lastly, understand that various programs, downloads, or extensions may be needed in order to complete the online test. Don’t wait until the last minute in hopes that everything will go smoothly with the system. If something does go wrong while taking the test, take a video or screenshot of what you are experiencing and immediately contact the professor.
