A master’s degree can take a lot of time, money, and commitment. Students want to succeed, make sure the effort was worth it and graduate with new knowledge and skills. A master’s degree will help you get jobs and promotions, that’s why it’s important to follow these steps for success in a master’s program.

Know Your Why

Know why you’re pursuing a master’s degree. Are you trying to get your dream job, earn a higher income for your family, master skills and learn more, or get a leadership position? Make sure that you’re all in, and that you’re doing what’s best for you. Your “why” will help motivate you when things get stressful and difficult. It will help you push through late night study sessions and hours of coursework.

Plan the How

Research options for your situation such as, online versus on-campus learning, your work versus school schedule, and how you will pay for your master’s program. Create a plan.

“I loved online learning,” said Stephanie Greenhalgh, Southern Utah University graduate. “Time is precious and scarce, so my tip is to plan. Make a plan upfront setting time aside for your studies so that you can stay ahead and accomplish your goals.”

Try breaking up your projects into smaller steps and milestones to make them easier to achieve. Make a schedule, to-do list, and set SMART goals to help you stay on top of your schoolwork.

Build a Network

Communicate with your professors. Reach out and ask any questions you may have. Get to know your classmates. You can form study groups and help each other with the class. Add each other on social media, including LinkedIn. You may be able to help each other in the future or create lifelong friendships. Remember that classmates and professors can be great resources even after you graduate.

Even though building a network of new people is important, don’t forget about your current support group. It’s important to maintain good social relationships. So make sure to put time into your family and friend relationships, even if you are busy. They can be a lot of help when things get hard and can help give you a life outside of school.

You can do it! A master’s degree can be a very useful tool for your future and there are many resources available to help you succeed. Make sure to know your why, plan your how, and build a network and support system.
