The College of STEM Student Spotlight for Fall of 2025 is Jessica Munro. Originally from California, Jessica moved to Cedar City with her family in 2015 and has considered it home ever since. Four years later, Jessica took her first concurrent enrollment course at Southern Utah University through SUCCESS Academy, a school that emphasizes early college experiences and academic rigor, setting the stage for her future success at SUU.
In the fall of 2022, Jessica officially began pursuing a bachelor's degree. Last spring, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology, and now she is working towards a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a professional emphasis.
When asked what the most meaningful aspect of studying at SUU is, Jessica said she loves "the welcoming and collaborative environment. SUU offers a place for anyone to succeed, regardless of their past experiences or future aspirations. Everyone at SUU is there to see each student succeed."
Currently, she is collaborating with Dr. Pierce, Department Chair and Professor of Chemistry, on a project focused on understanding the kinetics and mechanism of histidine ammonia lyase, an enzyme responsible for catalyzing the breakdown of histidine. In addition to her current project, over the summer, she participated in a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, where she studied the sequence-dependent kinetics of the methyltransferase ribozyme MTR1.
In addition to her research, Jessica contributes to the SUU community through her work at the Tutoring Center, where she shares her passion for learning by collaborating with students and faculty alike. She was also selected as a potential nominee for the prestigious Board of Trustees Scholarship and remains committed to maintaining her place on the Dean's List each semester - a testament to her dedication and hard work ethic.
While she is still exploring her ultimate career path, Jessica is confident it will involve both biochemistry and genetics, two fields she is deeply passionate about. However, no matter what she ends up pursuing, the college knows Jessica has a bright future as a scientist ahead of her.
Outside the lab, Jessica is a self-proclaimed aviation enthusiast. Recently, she earned her Private Pilot License and enjoys flying over the breathtaking landscapes of southern Utah. In addition to flying, Jessica enjoys singing and music, which serves as her creative outlet.
