Managed by the SUU Community and Workforce Development Department (CWD), these programs are designed to bridge the gap between traditional education and evolving needs of today’s economy.

SUU’s professional development offerings have shifted toward providing long-term, high-impact skills for workers and learners looking to prepare, upskill, or pivot careers. SUU provides flexible, online pathways for learners across the state and beyond.

Industry-Aligned Credentials

SUU continues to offer a variety of high-demand programs that allow students to gain credentials in a fraction of the time required for a traditional degree. This allows learners to quickly gain entry to their industry of focus, so they are able to join the workforce, while continuing to prepare for promotion or higher-level roles through degree-seeking or trade school. Key areas of focus include:

  • Industry Launchpads: The Geothermal Launchpad is an immersive, story-driven course introducing learners to the powerful potential of geothermal energy in today’s evolving energy landscape. Learners will meet industry professionals, explore emerging innovations, and gain insight into diverse careers shaping this future-ready sector.
  • Animal Services Professional Development Courses: These courses, offered in partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, prepare the learner for a profession in the field of animal services, and give animal lovers a way to deepen their knowledge for care of their beloved pets.
  • Business, Financial Services, & IT: Whether you are interested in a career in finance or management, computer science, or cybersecurity, these programs provide essential training required to stay competitive and prepare you for your next move.

Aimee DiBrienza, SUU Director of Adult & Workforce Education, shares a big “why” driving this effort: “Our goal is to create opportunity and impact; we pay attention to what is happening in our community and build for the skills needed not just today, but in the emerging future. If there is a gap, we hunt it down and solve for it, and it matters for our learners. We see them gain confidence, build a resume, get promoted, lane change, and ultimately, level up their lives. Impact is everything.”

Flexible Learning for the Modern Worker

Recognizing that many professional learners are balancing full-time jobs and family commitments, SUU CWD’s credentials are primarily offered completely online. This flexibility allows adult learners to work at their own pace, boosting their resumes without putting their lives on hold.

“Empowering the working learner is key to a resilient economy,” says Melinda Pfundstein, Executive Director of SUU’s Community and Workforce Development Department. “By creating accessible pathways that translate directly into real-world success, we are removing the friction between earning a living wage and gaining a world-class education. As we prioritize the needs of the working learner, we ensure that career advancement and lifelong learning isn’t reserved for those who can hit ‘pause’ on their lives, but are available to anyone with the drive to learn. We are doing more than teaching skills. We are providing access to tools for lifelong professional agility.”

Partnering with Utah’s Workforce

SUU works closely with regional partners to ensure curriculum relevance. Industry leaders, such as those within Visit Cedar City / Brian Head, emphasize that these certifications provide a competitive edge in the hiring process. By facilitating these career pathways, SUU helps stabilize and grow the regional workforce in sectors ranging from manufacturing to outdoor recreation.
