Working and Volunteering for SUU PREP

SUU PREP is an academically intense, mathematics-based, summer enrichment program, designed to develop abstract reasoning and problem-solving skills. PREP identifies middle school students with the potential to become scientists or engineers and reinforces them in pursuit of these fields. The program is presented over the course of three summers. SUU PREP expects to serve 75 students for SUU PREP 2025. The program will include coursework, team projects, class presentations, activities, special events, and examinations. 

SUU PREP 2025 will run on the following schedule

  • Staff Training: May 27-30, 2025
  • Classes: June 2, 2025 - July 18, 2025

Although there may be slight variations, the following is a typical daily schedule.

Monday - Thursday Schedule

  • Morning Check-In: 8:40 AM - 8:55 AM
  • Morning Classes: 9:00 AM - 12:35 PM
  • Lunch Break: 12:35 PM - 1:05 PM
  • Afternoon Classes: 1:05 PM - 3:35 PM
  • Afternoon Check-Out: 3:35 PM - 4:00 PM

 

Friday Field Trip Schedule

  • Morning Check-In: 8:40 AM - 8:55 AM
  • Field Trip: 9:00 AM - 12:50 PM
  • Afternoon Check-Out: 12:50 PM - 1:10 PM

Available Positions

SUU PREP has two types of positions available: teacher and teaching assistant.

Teachers

Iron County School District teachers are selected from current employees of the school district. Visit T-Bird Jobs for more information.

Teaching Assistants

SUU students can learn about this position and apply at T-Bird Jobs. The position pays $12 per hour; Teaching Assistants will work 7-8 hours per day, 4-5 days a week throughout the program.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety and appropriate behavior of program participants.
  • Assist with hands-on experiences, lessons, and field trips.
  • Attend classes and laboratories with students as assigned.
  • Be engaged in learning class material and actively help students during class time.
  • Assist with lunch supervision. 
  • Serve as a mentor to students, encouraging the development of a commitment to educational achievement.
  • Engage with students during lunch/activities.
  • Work as a team along with PREP staff.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Commitment to and interest in assisting middle and high school students in their academic and personal growth.
  • Prior experience working with adolescents preferred.

Skills

  • Utilize effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records.
  • Ability to assess student work.
  • Capable of maintaining control of student groups.
