CSTEM Undergraduate Research Fellowships
One Application, Two Funding Sources. The CSTEM Undergraduate Research Fellowships are made possible by two generous endowments. You may apply for student wages, research materials, or both, using a single application. The Walter Maxwell Gibson Endowment funds student wages for research projects. The L.S. and Aline W. Skaggs Research Endowment funds research materials, including consumables, sample testing, supplies, and travel for data collection.
Application Deadlines:
- Fall Semester - First Friday in October
- Spring Semester - First Friday in February
Checklist for Applicants
- Team: You must have both a student researcher and a faculty mentor, both from the College of STEM. Every application requires a student researcher and a faculty mentor.
- Originality: The project must make an original intellectual contribution to a STEM discipline.
- Approvals: If your research involves humans or animals, you must obtain IRB or IAUCUC approval before applying, with proof of approval submitted to gibsonfellowships@suu.edu.
- Timeline: Research projects need to break down how many weeks and how many hours per week the student researchers will be committing to. Generally, funding is capped at 2 semesters, with research teams having the opportunity to apply for further funding if needed.
Fellowship Commitments
Participating in a fellowship commits you to :
- Present Twice: Once on-campus (e.g., Research Symposium, Festival of Excellence) and once off-campus (e.g., UCUR or Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters).
- Submit a Report: All student participants must submit a fellowship report within 2 weeks of project completion.
Preparing to Apply
A list of questions from the PI application has been provided for support when research teams are preparing to apply. The file is view only; research teams will need to copy the file before editing.
Ready to Apply?
One student needs to submit the Student PI Application, which includes the project information. Any other student researchers on the project must complete the Student Co-PI application, agreeing to the fellowship terms.
Review Process
The committee reviews applications during the four weeks following the deadline.
Weeks 1–2: Initial Review. The committee checks for completeness and clarity. If they have questions or need more info, the co-chair will add comments directly to your application for you to address.
Weeks 3–4: Final Decisions. Funding is aligned with availability. Once finalized, award notifications (including next steps) are sent to all students and faculty mentors.
Note: Projects may be fully funded, partially funded, or not funded based on available resources.
