Writing Across the Curriculum

Regardless of the content you teach, you have assignments that require students to communicate in writing. CTI and the SUU Writing Across the Curriculum group is created resources to help you better prepare yourself, and your students, to communicate in these assignments. In addition to future face-to-face workshops, you can also now self-enroll in a Canvas course that covers the same content. Each training will incorporate:

  • Pedagogical References (at least one article and sometimes additional resources)
  • Access to the Writing Across the Curriculum Canvas Course with additional resources
  • Opportunities for assignment creation, revision, or assessment
  • Feedback from experienced writing faculty and colleagues across campus

You may attend/complete one or all sessions.

Writing Workshop 1: Introduction to Writing Across the Curriculum and Student Writing

This workshop will introduce the Writing Across the Curriculum program at Southern Utah University. It will also address both student and faculty concerns about writing and writing assignments. We will examine what writing takes place in the General Education English Classes and how that can be reinforced and expanded in discipline specific classes. Participants will get an opportunity to set goals and standards for their own classes based on this knowledge.

Writing Workshop 2: Writing to Learn and Scaffolding Writing Assignments

This workshop will help participants see the value in Writing to Learn and address how smaller assignments can deepen student learning and help address specific or specialized skills. We will examine multiple avenues and opportunities to include Writing to Learn across the disciplines. Participants will get to create their own Writing to Learn activity. We will also discuss how Writing to Learn can be incorporated into scaffolding larger writing assignments. We will work on building a specific scaffolding plan for individual classes.

Writing Workshop 3: Assignment Design

This workshop will help participants design a major writing assignment. We will approach this from a practical approach (e.g. What formal elements are required? What discipline specific conventions do your students need to know about?) and a more broad pedagogical approach (What are the learning outcomes you want to achieve? How will this assignment help students understand a concept or engage in critical thinking?). All workshop participants will be able to complete a new assignment for their classes based on these principals.

Writing Workshop 4: Evaluating Written Assignments

This workshop will focus on assessment by looking at two common approaches to grading –ungrading and rubric assessment–particularly how these approaches have been used to grade writing assignments. Participants will gain a broader understanding of these assessment tools as they relate to writing assignments and see how they could be implemented across a semester. Participants will have an opportunity to create two separate assessment options for their specific assignments or classes.
